From Charles, Catherine, and Rebecca:

Joan passed away peacefully this afternoon, Thursday, September 22, 2011, here in her home on her beloved Bowen Island, BC, Canada, after a courageous and inspiring five-year “cancer adventure”.

Thank you for all of your generosity toward Joan and all of us throughout this voyage.

Please feel free to post any messages in memory of Joan here on her blog.

This poem is by one of Joan’s favorite poets, John O’Donohue, and captures who she has been, is, and will be for us.

On The Death Of The Beloved

— John O’Donohue

Though we need to weep your loss,
You dwell in that safe place in our hearts,
Where no storm or night or pain can reach you.

Your love was like the dawn
Brightening over our lives
Awakening beneath the dark
A further adventure of colour.

The sound of your voice
Found for us
A new music
That brightened everything.

Whatever you enfolded in your gaze
Quickened in the joy of its being;
You placed smiles like flowers
On the altar of the heart.
Your mind always sparkled
With wonder at things.

Though your days here were brief,
Your spirit was live, awake, complete.

We look towards each other no longer
From the old distance of our names;
Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath,
As close to us as we are to ourselves.

Though we cannot see you with outward eyes,
We know our soul’s gaze is upon your face,
Smiling back at us from within everything
To which we bring our best refinement.

Let us not look for you only in memory,
Where we would grow lonely without you.
You would want us to find you in presence,
Beside us when beauty brightens,
When kindness glows
And music echoes eternal tones.

When orchids brighten the earth,
Darkest winter has turned to spring;
May this dark grief flower with hope
In every heart that loves you.

May you continue to inspire us:

To enter each day with a generous heart.
To serve the call of courage and love
Until we see your beautiful face again
In that land where there is no more separation,
Where all tears will be wiped from our mind,
And where we will never lose you again.

  3. I may not be able to see your face, and I will always hear your voice. I know heaven will be making more contacts, dancing more and raining down love and compassion on us here. Your night sky at Bowen tonight is a beautiful picture of my feelings ~~ your bright spirit soaring over those clouds. Thank you for sharing your life and this time on the planet with me. I love you madly and wish I could hug Char for you (that’s what you always called him!) Soar with the angels, sweet Joan. I’m off to tend to a burning planet! My love to your family, Your Dr Tutty

  4. Charles,Catherine, Rebecca and all other family members and friends—

Those of us who knew Joan had the privilege of knowing a great soul– a pure space of love, possibility and joy; a stand for other’s greatness and for anything is possible. I consider myself blessed to have known Joan.

May you each be comforted by each other and by all the memories you have of Joan. I miss her laugh and smile already. I am saddened by her passing., May all of us be blessed by our memories of Joan.

    Alan

  5. Dear Charlie (Alias, Doctor McNeill as we call you), Catherine, and the entire family,

I remember when Joan stopped leading our Introduction Leader classrooms in NYC… the loss was so great! I tried being transformed about it…. but it was difficult knowing that she wasn’t going to be with us at the Center every day anymore…

She would come by to visit our classrooms (in NYC) from time to time, acknowledging Maxine (in her 80’s) for “still being there”… Joan saying her mother would love knowing there were others her age participating!!

… and acknowledging Frank every time she came to visit… for going through days in the hospital successfully with Stem Cell procedures.. and appreciating the way he brought the work to his life those days in the hospital, now back in the classroom – healthy again.

Joan as we all know, acknowledged everyone, ALWAYS!!!

I remember another time, I came to lead to Young People and said, “Joan, I’m not feeling so well”. She said, “GET BETTER QUICK”. She was so intentional, so much fun, so light, so loving, so straight. I’m sharing specific memories and I know we all have specific memories of times we had with Joan.

I also remember Joan from before I knew her personally… when I worked in San Francisco and she worked in New York. She would send flowers and balloons for her friends’ birthdays!!!

Thank you for this opportunity to share and ‘salute’ a life of value … Joan touched everyone so very deeply.

    Love, Helaine Witt

  6. Inspiring. A life well lived. A leader. A fighter. A champion. Thank you.

Soar with the angels Joan, we need you.

    Peace Love and Blessings Always

  11. Dear Charles, Catherine and Rebecca,

Thank you for your elegant and lovely communication that so captures who Joan has been, is, and always will be for all of us. The picture you posted is the perfect expression of her spirit – her grace, her love, and her absolute unrelenting stand for each and every human being living a life of possibility. All of us who have been blessed by her presence will always have that as her gift to us and are bigger for it.

I send prayers of peace and love as you complete and create from here. Sandy Bernasek

  12. Charlie, Catherine, Rebecca and all the family,

I am so very sorry for your loss. I hope that your grief is held fast in love – Joan’s, yours, even ours – and I hope that love is a comfort now. Thank you for your grace, your kindness, and your generosity to have included us for these past few weeks in Joan’s life – for knowing that it would make a difference for those of us who knew Joan to be able to be in communication with her and to honor her and the enormous contribution she was. I am deeply and forever grateful.

My love and prayers are with you all.

  14. I wanted to say one more thing, I had this thought that Joan is in heaven creating and enrolling…I think of her now as the greatest introduction leader creating a world of possibility…I see her with a huge team…And I know that her magic will spread to us here…

My thoughts and prayers are with you

  15. I will always remember your love for life and your laughter. Rest in Peace Joan.

  17. Thank you Joan McNeil for all you provided for me and my life. I have the most amazing family (wife and twin 6 year olds) because of the profound difference you made for me personally during my participation in Landmark Education and specifically in the Introduction Leadership Program. There are no words to describe the immense gratitude and deep love I will always have for you. I could go on and write about your awesomeness, greatness, and worldly impacts, but those who had more than a minute to be with you, already know that about you. You my dear friend will be in my heart forever. To Charles and family, so many thanks for sharing her with us and the world. I am deeply sorrowed by your loss.
    Claudia Glaser

  18. Joan was a true inspiration and had amazing compassion and belief in people’s greatness. My condolences to your family. May God rest her soul.

    Marc

  19. Lovely, powerful, gracious light – thank you for sharing her with all of us.

  20. Joan, you are lightness and love. Truly an inspiration to so many. The world is a better place because of you being in it. xoxo

  21. Joan: We will miss you here on earth. The angels however, will rejoice at your presence. Thanks for our next door, childhood memories. Along with Bob and Doug, Barb and Cath, Danny, Maria and Lois….and many others………………..thanks for the memories….we love you. Bill

  22. “Your spirit was live, awake, complete”
Joan, this phrase from your favorite poem captures you completely.

In the time that Bhakti and I were so fortunate to spend with you, there is one small thing I might add here:

We felt we knew you completely and ourselves a little more so….

Thank you for your generous spirit, thank you for your gift of gab… and of love.

    Indelibly yours,

    Love

    John and Bhakti Pratt

    • I really should have written “favorite poets”. (thought I better get that straightened out…) Also,

      Dear Charles and Catherine,

We are sending you all loads of love and holding you close in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

Thank you so much for including us in your correspondance,

      love you! John and Bhakti

  23. The poem is beautiful and perfect for you, Joanie. You would want us to remember you as you are now in our presence. I will try my best to do so even as my heart breaks at the thought of never again experiencing on this earthly plane your soaring spirit, your infectious laughter and irresistable smile.

    e.e. cummings:

“Miracles are to come. With you I leave a remembrance of miracles; they are by somebody who can love and who shall be continually reborn, a human being;somebody who said to those near her, when her fingers would not hold a brush ‘tie it into my hand’ —“

  24. Joannie touched each of us and me so deeply and profoundly. As I sit here with tears rolling down my cheeks, I can only imagine the sadness, the missing, the joy and the love that is all wrapped up at this time for you – her family, her friends and all who knew her. Her indomitable spirit is one that will never be again. So vibrant, so huge, so magnanimous, and so loving! This one soul – this one amazing person that touched hundreds, thousands and even millions of lives – hearts and souls. I have never met another like her and will never, ever meet another like Joan again.

She called for us to be leaders, and let us know that there was no time to waste as the world was burning! She didn’t care about our smallness, our circumstances, that we didn’t think that we could do it or that we weren’t ready. Now was the time to step up and step into that future of possibility, leadership and the most amazing life one could ever imagine. All we had to say was yes and it was then ours…this amazing future of possibility and leadership. She never said that it would be easy and she did say that it was a life worth living and giving ones life for and to…she was right.

There were many an Introduction Leader weekend over the years where Joan could be seen, saying “There’s no time to waste! Step up! Be leaders!” There were times when right in the middle of the ILP weekend, she would come to the front and train us to do her twirling pencil routine for transformation and possibility. I still can do it today! (Roger Smith knows that one!) Or she could be seen in the directors chair laughing, loving and standing for each and every person no matter what. She always knew the right thing to say. I was always empowered by her and there was never, ever, ever anything wrong. If she was sitting in front of you, tapping her pencil for a very long time, you knew that it was time to get off it and cause another human being’s life to transform. She wouldn’t stop tapping that pencil until it was clear! So many memories; one moment at a time.

There will never be another Joan McNeill. She will live on in my heart, give inspiration to my soul and I will be forever grateful to have known her and had her be part of my life. Yea Joan!

Thank you for creating this blog and sharing her with us. May the prayers and love flowing from this site, comfort you, heal you and give you peace. We/I share you loss and will keep you in our hearts and prayers.

With great love and respect, Kathy DiBenedetto

  25. How do I put into words that which is wordless? How do I express loss when I know in my heart you are still present? I thank G-d for the time of knowing you in this life. If I could hug and kiss you it would be for me ~ I know we will be in the same time and space again one day.

“I carry your heart in my heart”.

G-d bless you Joanie, winged warrior.

  26. Ho do I express the sadness of not seeing you again? How do celebrate the joy of you being in my life yesterday and forever? I would hug and kiss you. I would laugh out loud with you. I always laugh when I think of you. One day we will be in the same form and we will laugh and dance with abandon.
“I carry your heart in my heart”.
G-d blessed us all with you ~ carry on blessed winged-one. Carry on.
    love, love, love, Margie

  27. Dear McNeill family,

You were selected by a power/person/something to share in Joan’s journey so intimately. And you were generous enough to share that with all of us. My love goes out to you in this time of completeness, of grief, of joy.

We are all blessed for knowing you,
    Margie

  28. Dear Charles, Catherine, and Rebecca,

Thank you for sharing Joan generously, and creating the beauty of your world together in poetry and pictures. I can’t begin to get your loss but the tears keep falling. Joan will always inspire me = Leader for Life. Somehow I think she will be in New York tonight for First Weekend. The planet is still burning, and there’s all the space for a great pencil twirler to lighten it up!
    With sadness and love,
    Pat Doumas

  29. God bless you all.

All of us were so blessed to have had Joanie in our lives. She was an irreplaceable inspiration and will be missed for so many reasons. There aren’t many people on this earth who could match her enthusiasm, her humorous wit, or her love of life, but you already know that.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and our blessings and memories will always be with Joanie.

  36. If ever one deserved to live the perfect life and die the perfect death Joan was one of those blessed souls. I know if we ask her she would say she did.
When you have an angel in your midst you lean things on a different plane.
Joan is that angel and was that for me every day life for many years as we worked together in the Berkeley center. She was with us at the birth of our daughter and took her role as God mother to heart. My family and I are blessed to have experienced this gift called Joan McNeill.
    ” I carry you in my heart……”

  37. dear family and friends of Joanies…she was like my second little sister for so long…pretty much the whole time she was growing up! i have oh so many memories that all come flooding back at a time like this. she moved far away from me after she married but just the mention of her name and i would smile! you all will be in my prayers as you go through this time…..i know she would want us all to remember to smile through it though, and not to stay too sad for very long. i can still hear her laughter and will always remember her sense of humor and wit! 39. I will never forget when Joan borrowed my Jester hat for a conference and it came back with bells on. She will always have bells on!!!!!!

  40. Charlie, Catherine, Rebecca and all the family,

Thank you for sharing all of this with us and letting us be apart of her last few weeks. She has made a profound impact on so many of us in our lives. Millions of people will never be the same because they met Joan McNeill.

I am who I am and I have the life that I have because of her. She taught me one of the most valuable lessons in the world. Love first and then everything else will work itself out. She taught me that it was OK to wear my heart on my sleeve at all times. Thank you for sharing her with us for all these years I promise the world will never be the same because of it.

I am blessed to have experienced the gift of her in my life.

    Love Liz Smiley

  41. Charlie,
Thank you for your beautiful tribute to your extraordinary wife.

  42. Charlie, Catherine, Rebecca and Joan’s loved ones( and god knows there is many!),

I am so very sorry for your loss. I can only say that today as a SEminar Leader for Landmark Education I get to make a difference in thousands of lives and empower , enable people to have the life they want. That, is a direct result of Joan’s miracle! The difference she made in my life is still so everlasting as I can still hear her voice reasonate in my head everytime I hesitate on sharing the work. Her heart was so big and passion so contagious that today and for every moment that I still have the chace to breath in and breath out in this life, I can only hope and stand for making the biggest difference I can make in honor of who Joan was and still is by virtue of our existence. The life I have is only possible inside of the greatest listening I had the chance to experience with Joan, she forever marked me and touched me! It is a great loss for humanity, but I want you to know that her word still stand, here, with me, in every breath I get to take! Joan, YOu were and still are the most beautiful soul I have had the chance to meet! Thank you for who you are! With much Love! David Lopez

  43. R.I.P. Joan McNeil, The difference you’ve made, the extraordinary person you were at every breath you took will forever be an inspiration to me. Thank you for all that yo were and all the lives you have touched, including mine! In loving memory….

  44. My love and prayers are with Joan’s family and loved ones.

Joan’s passing takes place during the observance of the ancient Indian tradition of Pitru Paksha, which began on September 12 and culminates on September 26 this year. This is a time dedicated to honoring our ancestors, and it is an auspicious time for pilgrimage. The ancestors will welcome Joan’s soul, as all the souls are remembered and worshipped during Pitru Paksha.

    God bless her great journey.
    With love,
    Shambhavi Christian

    • I did not know Joan but I would like to join Shambhavi Christian in a remembrance of Joan on this day Dec. 22, 2012. Sometimes we learn and treasure lost souls through others. I believe every soul moves to a truly wonderful place when their time comes. Our mission while on this earth is to love one another and it appears Joan did that very well. Our mission when we move on and now is to help others continue and when the time comes move on. Joan and Shambhavi (and I hope I) will help others on their journey. It’s A Wonderful Journey!

  45. Rest in Peace dear sweet sunshine Joan–you made our world a better place and infused some magic into our veins….

  46. We each have a little Mother Theresa in us. And a little Joan M. We will miss you and we will never forget who you were for us – a reminder of who we really are – GREATNESS.

My condolences to Charles and the family and close friends of Joan for the space you provided for her in her life, in her work and in her passing. It was who you were for her that helped her to continue to generate her being as Wonderment and Pure Love until the very end which we will forever savor.

  47. Joan,
Just thinking of you makes me smile.  How can I ever forget our “football dance”  in the hallway as I tried to leave the ILP with you blocking my every move to get past you. Most would have given up and let me walk away,  but you stuck with me.  I hope you know how much I appreciated that and the impact it had.  You have touched & made a difference in so many lives. I’m glad I got the opportunity to know you. The world is a better place for you having lived…and though we cannot see you with outward eyes, We know our soul’s gaze is upon your face,
Smiling back at us from within everything.

With Love to you & your family,
    Alicia Casali

  48. I remember being newly married when I first met Joan and she gave me the greatest gift… the possibility of inventing a marriage and a family based on an invented future. My husband and 2 daughters have been magically touched for 17 years now because of this. Thank you for sharing her with us. May her memory be a blessing.
    Love, Devora

  49. She was our core.
    Our hearbeat.
Our sense of right and wrong.

    Always joyful…leaving behind
    goodness and strength for
    so many,…yes so many.

There is a deep hole in
    my heart today.
i know she would ask me to
    fill it with love.

    I will. I promise, Joannie.

Your legacy of love will be
    passed on…
    Forever

    Love
    Elaine and Harvey

  50. I remember when I took this picture of Joan for my biography book. She is so beautiful and radiant. God, your turn to have fun now; Joanne is all yours, for the rest of eternity. Makes me almost look forward to eternity too 🙂

My thoughts and love go to Joan’s family. And to Rebecca, I want to express my love, gratitude, and profound admiration.
    Gilles

What a journey you are on. Thank you for including us and for supporting Joanie in being a beacon of light and love that will live on forever. Being part of your journey has connected so many hearts. I hope you find comfort in knowing that you are held by so many that love you.
    Much love to you,
    Janet

  52. Joan was a wonderful ,joyous and Sourceful Spirit.Speaking to Joan was always a joyous event in which I was left nurtured and a bigger person.I like everyone of us that loved Joan ,will miss her.
My prayers are with her family.
    Love,
    Helen

  53. i wrote this post 9/14/06. I didn’t know then that Joan was sick (was she?); only that I loved her.

Joani, in my life of no-one-I-can-trust, you were the ONE exception. I did truly love you and you were, are, my mentor, although you probably didn’t know. No, you knew.

I’m married now. Free falling, as of late. Assuming care of Asperger’s (autisim) step-son sorta out of the blue. Long story, Joan. But here’s the thing. 10 years ago before I met you, no, this wasn’t for me! But now Joan, you’re inside. What’s more, I think when you busted through the clouds the other night a spark of you got inside me. And I was like, NO JOAN! I CAN’T HANDLE THIS! But you’re in now. And yes, I can feel the beginnings of serving with joy — because of YOU. I love you, Mentor. I only wish I were brave enough to tell you when you were alive. But you already knew, I’m sure. J. (Animal Girl).

and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

  55. For Charlie, Catherine & Rebecca, and all of Joan’s family ~

I send you love. So much love ~

Thank you for allowing us to be so gracefully included during this precious time. Thank you for allowing us to continue to be touched by Joanie’s magic, and beauty.

May the rainbows never stop appearing on your doorstep.

    Love,
    Annette

  56. Joan across the rainbow –

You are the truest of joy beings. A hummingbird for humanity. Eternally sparking light in the heart of each person you touch, expressing the magic of being alive, and reflecting the divine in every being you witness.

Angel Extraordinaire, keep sending those effervescent beams of light and love.

    Charlie, Catherine & Rebecca –

Thank you for your beautiful tribute. It is a privilege to celebrate Joan.

    Love,
    Whitney

  57. Namasta,

in my training this week, as in every training I lead, there will be prizes, “exotic vacations, cars, cash and stuff like that…”

All my memories are better memories because I was fortunate enough to have had Joan in my life.

My life and the lives of those around me are happier because I worked with Joan.

My son will be a better man because I knew Joan.

It makes me sad when I think of your passing and you will always be with me in my heart, I am very thankful for that, very very thankful…

Namasta (with honor I bow to you)…

  58. Charlie,

Thank you for the poem and for sharing Joan with us in this way. Perfect, beautiful, complete. We will always carry Joan in our hearts as a teacher and inspiration. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, dear Charlie.

    With love,
    Janet and Art

  59. Blessings on your journey mighty being!
    Namaste.

  60. I learned of Joan’s passing last night on Facebook, and ever since, have been thinking of her and wishing her peace in her journey. She was lucky enough to love and be loved by so many.

Charlie, I think of you often with deepest affection and respect. You’re in my thoughts today.

  61. I love you Joan McNeil. I will miss your sense of play and laughter and all the games and special przes you awarded. I felt honored to be called McJill or Dr. Burns.

There is no one quite like you Joan. Special, beautiful and extraordinary still doesn’t capture who you were for people. You will be deeply missed by the thousands of people you touched over the course of your life. Thank you for touching my life.

  62. To Charlie and family: you are in my prayers. I know this is a difficult time for you, now more than ever. I am certain God is holding you in the palm of His hand. I love the following from The Bible (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8):

“There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens.
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down and time to build.
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.
A time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away.
A time to rend, and time to sew; a time to be silent, and time to speak.
A time to love, and time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

I have wept, laughed, embraced and loved all my times with Joan. I will always remember her. Peace be with you, Joan (Hoffman) Smith

  63. Joan,

It’s so rare a gift to have one’s life blessed by the presence of someone like you. Every bit of who we are today was contributed to by you. Thank you for always laughing, smiling, and twirling and tapping that pencil of yours. Thanks for awakening us to what’s happening out there. We’ve got your intention and are honored that you would have us fulfill it. We love you so much.

  64. Joan’s love, stand and enormous contribution reached me many years ago all the way over to Sydney, Australia. For years, as a young 20 something Registration Manager, I wanted to be like Joan when I grew up !! I was struck by her incredible capacity to acknowledge people and leave them know, loved and appreciated. She was an incredible, unforgettable and remarkable person whose contribution to so many thousands will live on for generations to come in all parts of the globe.

To Joan’s family – my heart goes out to you and I really, really thank you for sharing Joan & yourselves with all of us. That is such a gift.

Joan – rest in peace. You were my hero – I looked like you and dressed like you, so many said…..and then to, years later, finally meet you was wonderful for me. Thankyou for embracing so many and so fully.

    I love you.

  65. I just lit a beautiful golden beeswax candle in Joanie’s honor.

It has such a beautiful, steady, and sweet glow.

I am so very saddened by Joan’s passing.

I knew Joan, really, from working with Charlie at The Hunger Project.
And saw there, Joan’s and Charles’ love for and devotion to each other, and the power that their union had in supporting them in making monumental differences in the world.

Blessings and love to you, Charlie, and to your families, and to all gentle readers of this blog.

  66. Dear Joan,

Fly High and Soar. Your love and your light fills our hearts. You have so much love and you will always inspire us. Have lots of fun with Sonya, you were a true inspiration for her. I love you. Ayodele

    To Joan’s Family,

I send you love and light and will keep you in my prayers. Thanks for sharing and allowing us to celebrate Joan.

  67. So many beautiful words have been said…what a gift of a human being that Joanie was and is…I can hear her laughing now.

Charlie and family – I wish you love and peace during this time — I know the waves come and go…may those waves deliver you gently to the shore.

What a gift to have been part of this piece of Joan’s “adventure.”
    With much love
    Thea

  68. I met Joan in 1991 when I first participated in the, then called, The IFLP. What a great lady. She had me see my greatness and all my ways of being that were not working for me. She was the light of Landmark Education for me. Joan will live in my heart until we meet again. Her light will shine forever for she has touched so many lives. Love you Joan!

  69. I am deeply saddened by Joan’s passing.

When I think about her, all my favorite words and worlds come to mind and come to heart. Loving, beautiful, graceful, wise, unshakable stand, possibility generator, fun lover, laughter creator, transformative, of service, leader, fearless, gifted, peaceful, on the court, on fire, divine, coach, mentor, masterful, humble, courageous, committed, results producer, nature lover, spiritual, inspirational, contribution, magical, remarkable, extroardinary.

For me, Joan was all that and so much more that words cannot express.

    She will be that forever.

Joan – I thank you for the impact you’ve had on my life and promise to honor you by continuing to be the biggest possibility that I can be.

Charles and all other family members — my thoughts and prayers are with you. I think about you often. Thank you for allowing us to express our love, to you and to Joan, on this blog.

    Blessings, love and gratitude,
    Danielle

  70. I will remember you fondly as one who alsways had a funny rejoiner, was great to work with and was such a lovely spirit.

Thank you Charlie for making Joanie happy!

    Loving you,

    Dan

    • I was moved by Dan’s message I was lucky to lead the team with Joanie Dan and Cindy in the Berkely Oakland center in the 80’s Joanie made it easy she was brought laughter, joy and ease to what we did. She touched so many and gave them new possibilities of how to live life.
